I couldn't decide if I wanted the premise to be a metaphor or not and by the end I felt even more unsure. That said, we need more books like this about this side of motherhood. And we definitely need more books about motherhood and art.

I really adored this book! It is such a real and raw look of a woman's journey of becoming wild told with beautiful prose, haunting magical realism, and great touches of dark humor. If you liked Women Who Ran with the Wolves, but wished it was a more modern story, then you'll like this book. It's messy, a little disturbing, and also so freeing.

I consider the first half of this book an informative pamphlet on why I don't want to have children, and the second half, a pretty good case for motherhood (but not strong enough to convince me).

I understand what Yoder aimed for with this book, but I wasn't a fan of the execution. It did nothing for me except make me glad that I am child-free by choice. This portrayal of motherhood casts it in a very negative light, and I don't believe that's the book's intention. I also wasn't a fan of the violence against animals in this book. Perhaps it would have worked better as a short story. Although it wasn't very long, it felt like it went on forever. Overall, it was a disappointing read for me.
