I was having the best time reading the first 40%. It slowly went downhill from there :( I’m sad, i’m trying to grasp what the book truly was about. Yes i know it’s about mothers undergoing drastic transformation, from focusing on their careers to being a stay at home mom and doing her best to take care of her son. I love that! My mom gave up her career to take care of the family, and my dad was working overseas so she was practically handling everything all on her own. Dad was pretty much absent too when he was home, so i felt like I will definitely enjoy the book. Then i started getting confused, the incident with the cat, the dogs “welcoming her to the tribe”, Golden Retriever, the Jens, WW, the art performance…. I mean there were lose ends. I didnt have the closure i needed… but i definitely felt something. Idk what that is.

I was so intrigued by the premise of this book and also loved the concept of motherhood transforming a woman into something unrecognizable and angry. But the execution by the author sucked. It read very one dimensional and shallow. Also failed at every turn to tackle the protagonists privileges of financial stability, being white, having every opportunity to seek out real support and help.
I am not invalidating the narrator’s valid anger of being expected to give up her life and career as an artist, and the unfair expectation to make that sacrifice happily and not express any grief. I know my own mother had to struggle with that and it should absolutely be voiced and given space. But the way the author addressed this topic was with misogynistic undertones and privilege.
I especially hated the way the narrator spoke about other women and mothers. There’s a line, something about how she’d only befriend a mother if that woman was beautiful and hilarious and just happened to have kids. And the way she constantly looked down on the mommy play group women, and wrote them off as vapid and unequal to her.
The entire thing was just giving white feminism.
