Had a decent idea, but found myself disliking the main character tremendously (and I love unlikeable narrators) and thought some decisions were more for shock value than to serve a purpose within the story.

There's a good book in there. But you need to have more trust. Having essayistic passages in a fiction is absolutely fine, but it must add complexity and new texture to the narration. If it's a blatant close reading of what you just said, both parts undermine each other.

Okay so I don’t think this was the right book for me. It was really well written and it definitely delivered its intended message, but I didn’t enjoy it. It was weird. Not in a fun or lovely way, but in a confusing and uncomfortable way. I was describing it to someone the other night and they said “It sounds like a piece of modern art described in a book”. And that’s exactly what it was. Right down to the actual modern art performance described in the end of the book.
I will say, I’ve never read anything like it before. It was like an A24 movie that I didn’t quite vibe with.
It’s a mom who ends up turning into a dog and learning about herself and motherhood in general in the process. Most of the main characters didn’t have names, there were no quotations, and it was often hard to draw a line between when she was a dog and when she wasn’t. I think if I were a more meticulous reader, the details would have been more powerful to me. And I think if I were a mother it would have connected with the story more.
The message was this: being a mom is a full time job. A job that has no days off, no sick leave, and unrelenting stress. It leaves your body both physically and emotionally drained. Even years in. That our society somehow sees stay at home moms as less than or women not working a “real job”. When in fact it is a job and a very challenging one at that, especially if you do it well. And that women who do it deserve help and time off and breaks much like all people in the working world do.
So in conclusion, loved the message, wasn’t a fan of the journey.
