she’s def getting returned to the shelter
2.75.
Our unnamed narrator, an artist who now stays at home with her young son, thinks she may be turning into a dog. This was an interesting (but heavy-handed) critique of the expectation of motherhood, the weight of the mental load, and the sacrifices women are expected to make when becoming a mother. It's got an unreliable narrator and some surrealism which should be right up my alley, but there was just something missing. It felt a little too conceptual, a little disjointed and not fully formed. There were definitely some over-the-top grotesque passages (tw: animal death) that just didn't have the impact on me I think Yoder intended. Overall decent writing, a little slow, not a lot of plot, not a lot of resolution, and not a lot of explanation. I think novels can successfully do most of those things, but Nightbitch tried to do everything at once and it wasn't super successful for me.

Definitely not for everyone but this is one of the strangest and best books I’ve read in ages.

I don’t think I would’ve liked this as much before having my son. It’s more avant-garde and experimental than I normally read - but it was so cleverly on-point as a discussion of motherhood that it worked really really well for me.
