Abusing your cat isn't cool or #coquette just because you're a boymom on her period, i'm sorry.

This is a pretty perfect book.

Very unique, I found it fascinating at first. I could not put it down. And then I wanted to, I really wanted to. And then I regretted not giving up halfway through.

performance art is never not stupid

Bloody brilliant.

Unique, zany read! Really enjoyed it despite the subject matter being motherhood, which I find of little interest. I enjoy the fantastical aspect, the nod to the insane antics it takes to be a cutting-edge artist today, and the smart presentation of, at once, how much women do and how little anyone seems to care.

Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder

This is a powerful and provocative book that won’t be for everyone, so check trigger warnings before diving in.  It’s a fiercely feminist,  rage filled exploration of the limitations imposed on motherhood and womanhood - by society, partners, other mothers and ourselves.

The FMC, known only as Nightbitch, succumbs to the overwhelming demand of mothering and working full time and relinquishes her job as an artist and gallerist.  What follows is a descent into exhaustion, boredom and mounting resentment towards her husband who works out of town all week. She overwhelmed by the invisible labour of motherhood, insecurities about her career, the burden of failure, marital discontent, and burning feminist rage that manifests physically as she transforms into a dog.  This transformation becomes a release, giving voice to her yurnings, rage and providing a wild sense of freedom.

This book vividly articulates thoughts and emotions mothers carry but rarely say aloud - the ones that contradict the image of the ever patient, endlessly nurturing, competent mother we are expected to be. It gives shape to the shame, frustration, and fury that goes unspoken. And in doing so gives permission to be honest, to be messy and to be real.

This book is raw, angry and at points unsettling.  It is infused with an animalistic energy and a visceral sense of desperation, but also the fierce, awe inspiring love a mother has for her child. I loved the magical realism vision of motherhood, powerful, wild, and primal. The writing immerses you so powerfully in the realities of motherhood, the beauty and joy, but also its darkness and dread, making you feel seen.

This book is for all of the imperfect mothers out there. It’s a blistering, tender acknowledgment of the labour of mothering.
