DID NOT FINISH

Not bad, but not a book for me. This seems like a book for people who have never considered the negative aspects of motherhood and would find parts of this disturbing, but I was already horrified by the idea of motherhood so it mostly seemed redundant. I am extremely uninterested in reading about motherhood so I am stopping at 42% or 3:45:00 / 9:00:00. I do not want to hear 5 more hours of sad isolated mommy. bark bark

a horrifying read ? but i personally didn't get much out of it. the ending was unsatisfactory and disappointing to the "transformative" aspects of the mother.. it was a visceral and personal experience throughout the whole thing
just for it to be simply reduced to a performance ? to a way of making money .. ?
yoder's writing is amazing but she insisted, insisted, insisted for this to be a novel when it could've been a clear-cut short story super easily, it was going in circles which makes me wonder if this was actually a deliberate choice of writing ? the style itself becoming a metaphor for the tediousness and the lassitude accompanying motherhood .. ? even at the expanse of risking it to be thrown into the black dnf hole of many readers ? (very brave if this is the case lol)

nightbitch is beautifully flawed (the book, the character) i get what it does but also it bored me.. so i wouldn't recommend this to a fellow woman but i'd argue that it's a great read for men, husbands and wanna-be husbands/fathers especially.

Bizarre, original. I love the feminist messages. Sadly I just found the story boring and it took me ages to finish.

"How evil to praise women for giving up each and every dream."

loved this book. It is not an easy read- slow and meandering at parts, abruptly picking up in the most dramatic and wild ways, so often would i find myself going back, "did that just happen?" It was unsettling because I never really knew what DID just happen. And we DONT know what would happen if we all surrendered to our rage.

I was only really unhappy with the ending. I wanted her and the other mothers to go off and exist on their own, not be left with nightbitch trapped in this performance. but still. recommend if you are not squeamish.
