She’s a good writer - this book just isn’t my thing.

I stumbled upon this thinking it’d be something literary, or a commentary. Instead I was bungled by the excess of cigarettes and drugs. I suppose that’s LA.

And I categorically HATE Anders. I don’t think he’s been receiving enough hate in the reviews. Was I the only one to read his fantasising about Cleo🤨

It read away very easy, but the characters and their relationships lacked depth. Too many character POV’s with too little description of how they became the way they are.

A beautifully-written book starring the most insufferable collection of characters I’ve ever read about. Watching them make their mistakes, break apart, hurt each other, leave, grow, change, and become themselves was an experience that I practically inhaled by the end of the book. Bonus star for the prose, which is simply gorgeous.

This book made me physically ill. Like I’m not even saying that I thought I might throw up. There is a scene in this book that is absolutely haunting and imo completely unnecessary I read the scene this morning and cannot stop thinking about it and feelings sick its actually harrowing.

the reviews for this are a mess and so was it. i guess it’s trying to do the whole mediocre people in mediocre situations, human relationships type of reflective story but it just didn’t hit the way it’s supposed to. it’s too long, for one. and the narrative is all over the place, which i usually dont mind, but it just seemed erratic—maybe that’s the whole theme i dont know. lots of the characters are so stereotypical of their race/sexuality, in my opinion, and there were some parts that i think was unnecessary and even a little offensive.

(see: sugar glider)

it got better right at the end and i finally felt the warm, emotional feeling i was supposed to get the whole book. i can appreciate this book, but i don’t love it and it’s such a shame because i REALLY wanted to.

This was like reliving my 20s in a way. I felt so ambivalent about every character the same way I felt about my own close friends during that time. That impressed me but what really astounded me was how realistic the conversations and especially the arguments were. How the disagreement comes in waves. How a lull would, in most books, be the moment when the characters turn it around and make amends, but in real life, and in this book, instead turn into a hint at something unresolved that simply sends tensions soaring again. Superbly well written!
