I absolutely loved The Serpent and the Wings of Night. Once I started I couldn't put it down. The only reason I've not given it 5 ⭐️ is because at times the romance felt almost copy-pasted from other books I've read, down even to the language used. Though that didn't stop me from loving Oraya and Raihn and how their relationship developed. I did see the twists coming but not in a way that was so obvious, and not exactly how they played out.

listen. whenever there’s a tournament to the death with rivals/enemies to lovers involved??? i’m gonna eat it up every time.
however This time, for a lot of the book.. it just wasn’t doing it for me. first of all, the writing felt quite rudimentary and juvenile. it read as YA but the content was adult. that threw off the vibe for me. second of all, there wasn’t even a whole lot of rivalry in the first place, because they became allies almost immediately??? and yes there was still fighting even when they first became allies but it felt so.. lackluster. like the tension felt so forced imo.
i think the strengths of story lies in the foreshadowing and the flashbacks/interludes. those made for a really good twist ending that has me eager to keep reading. the world building was also very good in this. overall it’s just one of those cases where i did enjoy the book, bc at my core i loveeee vampires and cool/complex magic and political systems, but i have read better. i’ll still be continuing the series for sure.

I find this book to be slower than I expected. I just finished Powerless, and I was looking forward to a similar story line with the spice element I had been missing. However, the two books are very similar, but I felt like this one just drug on. I enjoyed the authors writing style, and I appreciate the world building and all the work that goes into a book like this. Unfortunately, it just didn’t hit all the spots for me.

While I am a bit tired of the trials trope, I couldn't put this down, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
