A couple that actually talked about their feelings? And didn’t play weird mind games with each other? And went to therapy to better themselves?
THIS is how you do second chance romance.

I feel torn about this book. On the one hand, there are so many important topics being properly addressed. It's emotional, funny, engaging. On the other, I wish the physical aspect wasn't so emphasized in their relationship. Like yes girl we get it, you're still attracted to him and miss the physicality. It felt like the relationship got reduced to just the carnal urges, and not how they were compatible otherwise.

It's a brilliant romance. The characters are so real you feel like you could walk by them on the street. The subject matter is incredibly sensitive, but from the authors note in the beginning you can see it was treated with the utmost care and consideration that it requires. It's an emotional read for sure, but an enjoyable one also.

This book HURT to read- wow. There are a lot of sensitive topics covered, and the characters were so painfully human that I couldn't help but root for them. However...I did have a few issues with the book that a lot of other people have talked about in their reviews, so I won't go into too much here. For one, Deja really got on my nerves. As the story progressed, I found out why she was acting the way she was, but at the same time, the utter lack of respect for her mom who had been through so much was really painful to read. Also, for a book set in Atlanta...it didn't feel like a Black romance to me in the way I was expecting. Like, it honestly felt as though it could have taken place in my white hometown and none would've been the wiser. Kassim was the only reason I kept reading tbh- that sweet boy was my favorite character. Overall, I would give this book a ~3.5/5 stars.
