finished this one late last night and didn’t review it, so my thoughts on it are here now. this book was excellent, i really like character driven books where you learn a lot about the person and see how they change and what motivates them and this one delivered exactly that. cant wait to read the next one in the series when it comes in from the library

I’m going to preface this review by saying I’m not a big fan of how first-person books read. This is obviously personal preference, so take this as you will. I think I would have connected more emotionally with the characters if this book was written in 3rd or 2nd person instead. The writing was void of emotion and I’m not sure if it’s because of the FMCs personality or Snyder’s writing. Either way, I wish I had connected better with the FMC and the MMC through their thoughts and emotions. I connected better with the side characters through the FMCs perspective of them.
This was a great book with an interesting plot that kept my attention. Even at times when it slowed from a medium pace to a slow pace, I wasn’t bored. I really enjoyed the characters and the character development. I’m a sucker for a true found-family trope, with interlaced and realistic bonds between multiple characters. Snyder delivered.
If you’re looking for a good romance book, this is not the one for you. While there is a sprinkle of romance, it’s definitely not the main plot point and would not cut it as a stand-alone plot. The romance is endearing in its own right, but don’t expect a beautiful and heart wrenching love story. Snyder is not an emotional write, and her reserve reflects in the romance. However, it perfectly fits the realistic, no-nonsense mindset of the two main characters.
I’m excited to start book 2. Four stars!

I absolutely FLEW through this book. Normally it takes me at least a week to read a book, I read this in about 3 days. I absolutely adored the way it was written, from beginning to end. I loved the characters and the way I was introduced to the world.
Although I am very sad about some of the characters, it also made me even more aware of how much the main character has grown in the course of the book.
The last chapter in my copy was a chapter that retold the first chapter but from a different pov and it felt weird and funny at the same time to see how he already planned this whole thing out, but at the same time he didn’t.

As with any tragic backstory that can drive someone to murder, check the trigger warnings.
