So I read this book back in 2012 (!!!) and gave it 5 stars. Now that I am almost twice as old as I was when I first read this book, imma give it a smooth 4.25. honestly I still really love this book but

HOLY SHIT WAS THERE REALLY A WHOLE TRANS NARRATIVE SIDEPLOT THAT I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT AS A KID. the library really did turn me gay, I’m so shook

I really enjoyed this story! There was enough mystery to keep me hooked and I really liked the premise. There were a few predictable plot points, but there were enough other surprises that I didn’t mind the predictable parts. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

a weirdly interesting and concept. ari and janco own my heart. yelena is such a good protagonist, morally-grey, determined, and caring; i liked her a lot.  i’m excited to read the follow-up as the magic system is compelling and is going to be explored a lot more in that. 

though i would take heed to the content warnings as they are incredibly necessary as it isn’t a one-off occasion in the book. i would recommend this if you don’t mine a slow-burn romance as more of a side-plot to political intrigue and magic.
