I was initially interested in this memoir to learn more about how women from a culture (which I assumed was) very different from mine viewed a book like Lolita. After reading it, I appreciate this book as a glimpse into Iranian culture during a tumultuous time in the country. In some parts, I felt that Nafisi's class privilege, especially compared to her younger and sometimes less privileged student, really stood out; I felt I understood some point one of her students was trying to make when she didn't seem to. For me, that created some interesting conflict, finding the points in her narrative not only where I agreed and identified, but also where I saw something differently. In some cases it was more difficult for me to relate because I hadn't read much of the literature she was referencing. That said, I appreciate memoir and nonfiction that draws parallels to fiction and literature, and this book falls into that category for me.
