The audio is excellent, highly recommend that format. Not a full 5 stars because it did slow quite a bit in the second half and while I really enjoyed that (the high tension throughout can be frustrating for me) it did seem to have a different tone. Oh and also because I don't know how someone who is born and raised on Montana doesn't own a pair of mitts. And it mentioned "dry winters" in Montana - is there anywhere in Montana that doesn't get any snow??

Le sigh.

I really, really like the first third of this book. The heartache both Hs went through really got to me, and their tentative attempts to reach across the fact that they are long time enemies were sweet. I really felt their longing for contact, for crossing that bridge, and I liked writing in general.

But then, things happend too quickly, too conveniently. There wasn't even a satisfying reason to why they were so deeply rooted enemies in the first place, and I didn't feel the love either.

I generally liked that Deacon wasn't fazed by his attraction to a man, but I felt his just-go-with-it attitude lacked depth. (Which is often the case for the GFY trope, and I wonder why an author would skip that perfect opportunity to let us feel the excitement of something new, too.)

In the end, I not only didn't care for Deacons and Julians HEA, I found it boring, if not annoying.

I need to stop jumping into books blind. This is a sad book. I felt sad from page 1 until page 308 (when it ended). Cancer fucking sucks and life is hard.
The writing was good. The characters were good. Deacon is a bit emotionally stunted but had growth. Julian seemed a bit young in mentality but also grew. I do hate that Julian did not read the letters left for him by Rhett (his late boyfriend and Deacons brother). I would be devestated if I hand wrote letters to ppl before I died and they refused to read them 😢. I'm so thankful this book had a happy ending because DAMN!
