totally engrossing and very playful. this is my favourite medium for gaiman. the stories in this one (in particular “seasons of mists”) are really nice.

Volume 2 of The Absolute Sandman collects Season of Mists, A Game of You, and Fables and Reflections. I would have enjoyed this volume for Season of Mists alone. Finally, the reader is introduced to the rest of the Endless. It was also fun to watch the interaction between Morpheus and Death, as always.

A Game of You focuses on Barbie, a briefly mentioned character from The Doll's House. I did like the nods towards The Chronicles of Narnia and other children's fantasy books, but I couldn't help but feel that A Game of You was a nice diversion.

This is also true for Fables and Reflections. As with Dream Country, I just don't dig the vignettes and world-building but not story-advancing issues as much. That said, some of the diversions were worthwhile, especially the issue in which Cain and Abel tell stories.

I'm still enjoying my foray through the Sandman series. My only complaint about this volume is that many of my questions haven't been answered and these volumes only thickened the plot a bit.

Still very good, with some of my favourite standalones, but A Game of You didn't quite hold my interest. It was pretty, but the Adventures of Barbie's Animal Friends portion didn't quite hold my interest. Still, very strong overall.

So there's actually a lot of great story here, and yet there were quite a number of times it felt like it was a bit ... dragging. A bit ... fillerish. So when I've gotten to the end and I'm reflecting on it in a "fine enough" manner, I've gone back to the table of contents. And it was interesting, because reading the TOC reminded me of all the great stories in there (particularly the larger arcs) which actually accounted for almost all of it.

Neil Gaiman is a fantastic story teller. The weirdness and the whimsical nature of the Sandman series really forces you to think outside of the ordinary. And I absolutely love the references or hat tips to literature and history throughout!
