Two separate but continuous stories in this good series.
First, a high octane story about race cars - Ethan aka Roy isn’t quite the loner he portrays, with friends at the race track. Though it is Jack that gets the adrenaline rush of a high speed car chase. Though a little hanging doubt left.
And then, Jack falls ill and isn’t actually sure whether Ethan has been to look after him or if he was a figment of his fevered imagination. This one definitely seemed to just end - i did check I hadn’t swiped two pages! So not sure if there is more to come from this story arc.
Enjoyed these two once again.

This book is comprised of two more "snippets" of Ethan and Jack's encounters (for lack of a better word, lol) "When the Devil Drives” and “At Death’s Door” — and covers a timeframe of two months.

In When the Devil Drives, we see another side of Ethan. One were he dons his racing persona and take Jack along for what should be a fun weekend. Their relationship seems to be growing, with Jack starting to acknowledge his feelings when, of course, things don't go as planned.

In "At Death's Door" things don't go much better...

The one thing about this author is her brilliance of giving you enough but leaving you wanting more *grin* Can't wait to read the next installment of this series.

Oh, and for those wondering why it's not 5 stars? I rarely ever rate short stories 5 stars, cause I always want more, lol.

I'm so ready for this series to come to an end because I just have to know if Ethan is Jack's endgame. I want these two to be together so bad that the suspense is killing me!

Ethan asks Jack to accompany him to some race that he will be participating in, and Jack agrees. If you think this novella is just about Jack and Ethan getting it on, and race car jargon, then you are wrong. There is an assassin, flu virus, car chase, emotions that give you the feels, and finally a ending that leaves you wanting more.

All I can say if you are a fan of the series like me, then the lovely L.J Hayward did not let us down in this one either. December 9th can not come fast enough.

Now this one was disappointing. Sure it was hot between Ethan and Jack. But frankly the story lost steam. I felt it was really rambling on about the last 30%. And then it just ended. No intrigue, no mystery. It just ended. I really hope the next one is better.

Hot pink Ferrari? Alright, book, I'm listening.

Okay but, jokes aside, I do feel like there's a lot that the author throws into the mix in regards to the characters' personalities & psyche that then gets dropped five sentences later? I understand these are more like bridges between the first and second book, so they're quick and easy, but still. There's a lot being weaved, so maybe one or two things could be addressed/resolved. Does that make sense? Also, the action sequences are fun but then it seems to me that some of Jack's reasonings or reactions are a bit ??? honestly I just don't think they make sense for a supposed spy. Biggest example is him not checking the report thing before going back to work. I'm confused but tbh I'm having so much fun I genuinely don't mind.

I am quite interested in what seems to be some pretty bad abandonment issues, on Jack's part, of course.

4.5 stars!

So happy to get more Jack and Ethan and for the most part, this didn't disappoint. The second story was just lacking a little compared to the first short story, because Jack was sick the whole time and we weren't sure until the end that Ethan was even there and that any of it was actually happening. I would have been super disappointed if he hadn't been.

But we did get a little more insight into Jack's character and I did love that Ethan took care of Jack through his illness. Ending was abrupt though - something this author seems to do, frustratingly!

I loved the first short story more, I loved seeing Jack and Ethan deepen their relationship even more and get close to something - as Jack things to himself, a relationship thing. I had fun with the jealously on both sides and the sexytimes ;)

It also did a good job of showing how there is still so much more for Jack and Ethan to learn about each other. Can't wait for me, especially the second full novel because I sooo want more (and that first kiss! Please!)

When the Devil Drives

It's truly easier to wait for the second book in this series with those exceptionally good short stories. And here we have two in one and both great. After reading the first one about Jack and Ethan spending time together on the car race, I thought that the second one just can't be better. But then I read this next story and it is sooo cute and somehow bitter-sweet. Now I'm even more eager to read the full instalment to this series!
