So the first 80% of this book is totally fine, but the author's note at the front of the book says she prefers the reader to go in blind, which I did. Normally I read trigger warnings for stuff like this but since they weren't readily available in the book and it was recommended not to read them, I didn't.
Don't be like me. Read the trigger warnings.
This part is a spoiler, but one I think everyone should know before reading. The ending of this book is awful and in the last two chapters there is SURPRISE INCEST that gets completely glossed over. However, it wouldn't have even mattered if I had checked the trigger warnings, because they don't list it!
"It's odd, knowing James and I share a brother" SHE SAYS ONE PAGE BEFORE HE GOES DOWN ON HER AT HER DAD'S FUNERAL.
The trigger warnings do include sexual assault of a minor, which is only ever alluded to in the book and not outright stated. Unlike the incest. That part is pretty clear.
About 90% of the spice in this book happens in the last quarter of it, and it makes zero sense with the plot. It's almost like Emily had a sex quota to hit and she was rushing to meet the deadline. The book was better pre-spice.
Will I ever read an Emily McIntire book again?
Maybe. Once the horrors of this book have been shunned into distant memory, I may convince myself it wasn't that bad and read the next one. Honestly without the dumpster fire ending and weird pseudo incest it would've been fine.
Needless to say, this book was awful.

Writing is mediocre and both of the characters are incredibly boring. I liked the fmc's character but the mmc is the most basic mafia character. I know to keep my expectations low when picking these books but at least make the drama entertaining.

I LOVED THIS BOOK
Mafia boss? Grumpy sunshine? SPICE? You got it ALLL.
I devoured this book in 4 hours, I could not put it down!

This was a wild ride that I binged in 2 sittings (if I had started earlier in the day, it would have been one sitting). For those who avoid this title for the Pedophilia trigger, it is not graphic at all (that is not a trigger I can handle if graphic). There were only implications of it having happened in a characters childhood. This was just dark enough to dip my toes into the Dark Romance Genre and I loved every minute of it.
