So this book is a dark twist on the story of Peter Pan. But mostly, it's about Wendy and Hook - it gets pretty gorey and moderately smutty. I enjoyed the characters, but sometimes, especially in the beginning, it had me shaking my head. This is the first in the "Never After" series, but they are all standalone, and I think I'll give her next dark fairytale a listen, too.
When I started reading Hooked, I couldn't put it down. But the more I read, it just didn't meet a dark romance standard for me.
And if I could sum this book up into one word it would be TOXIC!!
As you must know this is a similar retelling of Peter Pan.
It starts off with with the introduction of our main characters Wendy and Hook (James)
Hook is presented as the jaded hero trying to get revenge for his childhood lost to the depths of NevAirLand. And on his journey he meets Wendy, Wendy is the light to his darkness and their chemistry sets off fireworks throughout the whole book. But as much as he falls for her, he knows that his revenge comes first. But the way his heart beats fo her, it may just ruin his plans.
I loved the whole dynamic of this....*Spoilers may be ahead*
This book was just all over the place.
Throughout the whole book Wendy grovels to Hook even though he did her wrong, multiple times. and she forgave him only because of his horrible childhood or the way he "took care of her." And most of the connctions Hook had like his friend Ru, I just didn't feel the connection there or see it the way Ru talked to Hook.
And Wendy wanted to be Respected, not treated like a porcelain doll....etc. But continued to let all parties walk over her.
And her brother is a main important role in the book but he's barely mentioned. And if he is mentioned its more of as an afterthought.
Im jut sad that a book that had so much potential let me down. I didn't go into this with alot of expecatations, more excitement than anything and I was dissapointed. I Hope that as I continue the standalones by Emily Mcintire there's improvement.
Thanykyou,
