A fast read and well-written but something was missing for me from this book. One aspect is that one of the main characters is very successfully portrayed as depressed and helpless and I didn't find the turn around at the end believable. The father character was appealing and engaging.

I had to get over halfway through before deciding if I was going to continue. But then I fell in love with Dermot. He grew on me, and I had to finish. Not much of a plot, but some beautiful writing and character development as we follow the changes in a father-son relationship and the realities of expat living in a fallen economy.

Scott Pack sent me this as part of his 'fiftieth birthday book clear out'.

Really nicely written and well constructed novel with excellently drawn characters. I read it all in one go and it's a nice balance of gentle humour and bittersweet sadness. I realise this doesn't sound particularly amazing but I would recommend it.

I recieved this book as a Goodreads First Read and I must admit it was a better read than I thought it would be. It's a tale of re-discovering one's true self, re-building family relationships and the hardships of emmigration and the isolation that often comes with it. Although I thought the plot was rather slow in places it was a good reminder of how it's never too late to change or to talk about or to face your problems and fears.
