Obviously a monumental work of its time, and fascinating as a compendium medieval religious and scientific thought, but I was surprised how much of it was essentially: "Okay, now let's see what this Florentine aristocrat did to end up in hell."
A challenging reading experience at times, but once you get into the groove of the sentence structures, it's not so bad.

Like... It's not bad. It's just... Very religious and I'm not really invested in anything it is going on and on about 馃檲
I like the narrator and it's nice background noise... But I don't feel like I'm getting anything else from it?

Moderate: Torture
Mainly read because of all the other literary references to it. Ready for Solzhenitsyn In the First Circle now.
I enjoyed Purgatory more than Hell which now I write it down doesn鈥檛 appear that surprising. Something about that medieval conception of hell is - again not surprisingly - is a real drag. Maybe I was getting used to the chatty vernacular of Dante in this translation but this journey was easier and the series of mini biographies seem less hateful. Of course there isn鈥檛 the musicality of the original Italian but it goes more for the breezy ambition of the piece.
Had us in the first half, not gonna lie.
AKA: Inferno was cool and entertaining, Purgatory was alright and Paradise was boring/I did not understand most of it. I have no doubt if you want to spend the time understanding the places, people, stars and philosophy the last part is more enjoyable but i did not want to do such.

I absolutely loved reading Inferno. It is still so relevant to today, and it is not surprising it is a classic. Purgatorio and Paradiso, however, were anchored in Dante's time, with references that have little to connect to today.
