this book felt like the final installment in a trilogy to me. my Mom's old copies of both The Aeneid and The Divine Comedy are now resting next to my own mass market paperback copy of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Virgil gave Aeneas a home in Rome to bolster a founding mythology. Ovid took Bacchus/Dionysus and gave Rome Liber and the rest of its pantheon. and now Dante scoops both of their worlds lovingly into his arms and delivers them to a new context within Renaissance Catholic myth. an evolving theory+story that shifts to fit everything that came before it.
i won't pretend there weren't long bored doldrums while reading this. but i found my mind circling the drain dug by a few of Dante's motifs in the Comedy that i think i'll be stuck on for a while. the first is his geometric conception of morality. the second is his ability to immortalize inconsequential people just because he chose them as avatars for a given vice or virtue. the final one is his ability to place human reason within its subordinated position beneath beauty and how it affects the other two.
i'm grateful for all of the art that helped give this book space in my mind

This is probably the funniest non-funny book I have read. Do not interpret my understanding in the wrong way, there were parts of this book that left me horrified and sitting on my bed thinking what have we done. But in retrospect, the premise of the novel is truly something else: a dead roman poet guides a medieval man through different levels of hell, purgatory, and heaven, and in every level the medieval man gives a passing comment on Florentine politics. Despite its... oddities... I will say that I am enticed by this novel, and I should very much like to do some extra research as to why Dante felt the drive to write such a book. Inferno felt like a fever dream, I am not really sure what happened or why it happened, nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed it - perhaps that is indicative of Dante's writing abilities. Purgatorio, however, was byfar my favourite poem, and maybe that is an unpopular opinion, but I felt puragtorio more, that it to say I connected with it more (and perhaps that is indicative of my catholic upbringing but thats another story for another day). Paradiso lost me a little, but there were moments where I was held capitve. All in all it was a wild ride, and I have the impression that it is one of those books that I will have to read again and again to fully comprehend.
