2024: to be honest, i don’t know if i can articulate how much this poem means to me.
all of it is not only my muse, what virgil is to dante and statius, but also the essence of what love poetry is.
for one to dedicate your entire life’s work to the poetry, the woman and the god you love more than the entire world outside of them is beauty in a way one can only hope to achieve a slight glimmer of.
this book itself is a journey and a religious experience. i do not love god, but even I love dante’s god. for someone to encapsulate such perfection is near impossible in literature. and yet it makes sense why this seven hundred year legacy is to us what the aeneid was to dante.
the metaphysics and theology are prominent but fade away and can be ignored due to this beauty. they are important and accompany and exaggerate the sheer excellence of the empyrean. if i could write the final lines as well as dante could, i would be a world famous poet too.
i love virgil more than anything. the best character ever.
i love this so much.
this is my love that moves the sun and other stars.
2025:
my review last year encapsulates it all. yet another translation and yet another means of becoming utterly enthralled. there is nothing that can surmount this piece of literature, it is rich and dense and comforting and yet lethargic and laborious and perfectly timed. you experience dante’s experience and you experience the horrors and delights. purgatorio is as ever the most beautiful canticle. i had a few issues with this translator’s interpretation as they used a few modernisms that i think broke the timelessness of the poem in places. still.
i read la vita nuova, rime, georgics , eclogues and the aeneid this year and it informed so much. i hope to read much more this next year so that next time i will pick up all of the beautiful ovid and aristotle references i missed. i may give summa theologica a miss though. it’s HUGE. this is the epitome of literature.
he did write what has never been written of any other woman. and what has never been written of any other subject that i doubt will reach such divine heights again.
dante. this is my muse, my beatrice, my virgil and my statius and, my love that moves the sun and other stars.

I would not advice listen to this audiobook. The narration so-so. And this audio quality is not great.

The density of this text cannot be understated. It is saturated with references to Italian, Roman, and Catholic history and mythology. I enjoyed and understood this best when I was familiar with the figures being referenced. I enjoyed the Inferno and Purgatorio much more than the Paradiso. The idea of contrapasso is compelling, but, as the narrative departs from this structure in Paradiso, it became far too abstract for my liking. I often felt as though I was taking in images rather than a narrative.

A very challenging read. Very dense and you need to have some knowledge of Greek and Roman Gods and the Bible minimum to understand it as they are referenced frequently. Inferno was the best, then paradise and purgatory last.
