I liked this book better than Jacob's Ladder. I cared much more about the central characters of Jesse and Edward (two ex-slaves) than about the characters in Jacob's Ladder. The story is superbly written and by the end you can see that these two main characters follow completely different trajectories out of slavery — one overall positive and one overall negative — after the end of the Civil War. (Although both trajectories have their ups and downs; their stories are not trite and simplistic.)

I especially enjoyed reading about the experiences of native people after the Civil War and this is something I would like to learn more about. A sense of impending tragedy permeates the book, because you know that the history of the native people results in what was essentially a genocide.
