It was a little slow but it wasn’t the kind of slow I usually complain about… it was slow in the way that we are experiencing pieces of a very long life with Addie and learning about her 300 years on this earth, which takes time. So while the pacing and lead up to the conclusion felt slow, it wasn’t unbearable and it was necessary in a way.

As a whole, Addie’s character wasn’t anything overly special (I know, I know) but I think that is part of her charm. She is just a regular girl who wished one day that she could live life on what she thought would be her own terms. Ultimately, I think her humanity is what made her stand out and what made this story so easy to feel deeply about.

I almost found myself wishing that she and Luc would find a way to be happy (call me crazy, I’m aware) because even though he was the one who put her through a life of trouble, he provided something important for her over the years too and that was stability and some semblance of romance. I truly think he loved her in the only way he knew how, maybe the only way he was capable of, and I really expected things to end differently with them.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about the conclusion of this book. I’m happy she was able to give him his life back but at the same time, I wanted more for Addie.

"They teach you growing up that you are only one thing at a time - angry,  lonely, content- but he's never found that to be true. He is a dozen things at once. "

This book made me feel many things. Intrigue, curiosity, adoration, suspense, wonder,  reckless abandon, frustration that Addie was never more into travel beyond parts of Europe and the US. Every step of the way the times being featured reflected  the social structures, values and expectations. Overall this was a fantastic reading experience and I loved the runaway thoughts popping up  throughout my days about Luc's potential influence in our real world (who else has gone out like Beethoven?!). Time to dive deep into this author!

The first half of the book was really engaging
but I was a little let down that it turned out to be just another case of a woman sacrificing herself so a man can “reach his full potential.”

Soooo this was unexpected... Not to be dramatic or anything, but this is the most well written book I have ever read... and one of the best books in general that I've read...
Everything about this was perfect! The beginning was heartbreaking, the middle was thought provoking, the ending was bittersweet and perfect!
This book tackles so much. It is about grief, grieving the life you could have had, grieving the loss of people you love. It is about love, love in humans, love for the world, love for art and the little things in life. It is about finding your purpose in life and in the world. It is about being invisible and seen. It is a book about life and everything that comes with it. It is a very slow book, nothing really happens but at the same time everything happens.
V.E. Schwabs writing is incredible in this book - it could literally be studied in school.
Addie was such a strong, cool and amazing character. AND HENRYYYYY! Oh the love of my life! Both characters are so incredibly real.
All in all, I really loved this book, and I have never read anything like it before.
