I chose this book because I also lost my father during COVID (and my grandmother and my dog), so I thought there might be some words of comfort or solidarity that might resonate with me. But this book is deeply personal and deeply specific to the author. My relationship with my father was more complicated than hers, and the overwhelming and pervasive numbness was not part of her experience. So, it wasn't what I was looking for and felt a bit like a necessary exercise for Adichie's personal healing.

The pain is visceral. I think, in some ways, Adichie has here brought into being her own kind of communal grieving, for which I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to partake in.

Her description of grief felt so familiar. 30 years later and it all still rings true.

Wow! What a beautiful portrait of what it was liked to be loved so deeply by a father, who seemed like an irreplaceable man. It helps em connect with my friend who also lost her father.
