A skewed perspective on branding and marketing. It's biased and blindly optimistic.
When this was published it was a seminal book that defined the new business model for the internet. Since then, things have moved on, and some of the subjected predicted in the book never did come to pass.
In essence, the long Tail is the niche products and services that large stores and business cannot justify holding, when they only sell one or two a year. A small business could offer this prior to the internet coming along, but it was primarily mail order, or very specialised.
Along come the internet, and suddenly your customers could find you far easier than ever before, and you could justify stocking the item that sold one a month. With the advent of digital products, the sales capacity is infinite.
It is very well written, and i really enjoyed reading it.

No surprise that a book published in 2006 about the future of business now reads as a history text, but it was informative. The chapter order felt haphazard, but I gave this an extra star since the way I discovered it to add to my reading list is a perfect example of the long tail theory.

I got this as a free ebook for my Nook and dug into it as my nonfiction read for the moment - and am VERY glad I did!
Written in easy-to-understand terms (especially for me!) it lays out the concept of the Long Tail and how it affects all of us, from the author to the consumer to the average person shopping at Walmart.
I really enjoyed this book - it explained a lot of what I've been seeing around me but never pulled together into a theory and extrapolated as to the future. As an author I found it very useful, if not frightening in some spots.
Highly recommend if you're looking for a nonfiction read.

Fascinating book combining business, economics, technology and marketing. Companies seem to be following this concept to the bank--especially web-based or web-connected ones.
