What a gorgeous book. A much needed ray of light.

I initially enjoyed the writing style but it's a 100 page story stretched way out. The writing trended more YA the longer it went on and interpersonal relationships were predictable and fast. If it was a bit shorter I could have enjoyed it at as a beach book. Maybe a younger me would have enjoyed it.

loved it until i learned that the (white) author used a literal genocide as inspiration for this book

Learned the hard way that this flavor of fantasy simply isn't for me. I enjoyed the main character and his cat, but the other characters were a bit too fantastical for my taste. Preference only!! The writing itself was great and I do think it seems like an interesting story for the right readers.

I can’t wait to read the sequel (scheduled to be out this year!) if you liked Ms. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, you’ll love this! Linus is a boring man, with a great heart. He investigates Magical children’s orphanages for the DICOMY (Department in charge of Magic’s youth) and his objective reports determine if these homes stay open or are shut down. Linus goes to investigate magic-and finds some of his own <3

Great book. I decided on 4 stars because I thought some of the dialogue/ monologues were too long or cheesy. I also had to look up 28 (TWENTY EIGHT!!) words because I didn’t know them…I could have inferred I’m sure, but they weren’t in my normal vocabulary. Word choice was a little different…but I chose this book because TJ Klune is neurodivergent and that fit a prompt in my 52bookclub challenge for 2024.
