I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of it but I feel the ending really let it down.

“Outside its back door, though, she can breathe. She plants a row of apple trees, along the high brick wall. Two pairs of pear trees on either side of the main path, plums, elder, birch, gooseberry bushes, blush-stemmed rhubarb. She takes a cutting from a dogrose growing by the river and cultivates it against the warm wall of the malthouse.”

Act I was so well paced and interesting. Really dropped off the pace in act II, harbouring the same point for too long imo.

Wow I cried so much reading this book!

It's a beautifully written Faye tale, with descriptions that have depth and character. The people all have their own selves and you get at least a glimpse into many of their heads which I love.

I found Agnes frustrating sometimes and perhaps a little too otherworldly, she's less human for her description and that caused some odd feelings during parts of the book. She's essentially the main character if you had to choose one... but was just a bit alien throughout the book.

It's a very contained story and that really adds to its telling. Really really good book, highly recommend
