Once the novel actually got going, the story was great. It had a good plot, was interesting and engaging. At times, the story was very sad and hard to read due to the nature of the subject matter. I would definitely highly recommend the book to others and plan to reread the book in the future.

I did not give the book 5 stars because it really takes the author about 200 pages before the story actually gets going. Since the book is a long one, I feel these first 200 pages could easily be condensed.

Wow, what a book. Love and loss and hope and despair, adventure and danger, war and family, all in one. I will be thinking about this one for a long time.
