Warren Ellis's Planetary books are about a group of characters that explore the multiverse. So its only natural to send these characters into other comic book universes. And its fantastic, the first story throws them in with the authority from Wild Storm publishers along with a silly H.P Lovecraft cameo. While the other two feature DC comics stories. The art is ranges from pretty good to amazing throughout this comic. Yet the main flaw unfortunately comes from Ellis himself. He sort of jumps into these stories with a sort of 'sink or swim' mentality. If you know the characters its cool but if you don't then tough luck. Another problem I have is that he goes way overboard on scientific/technological themes in these stories that sort of went over my head. Still this is a book worth reading for Ellis's fans. As for the average comic reader I recommend diving into Ellis's other works before you start this one.

Meh -- not up to the standards of the other books... although the storyline tying in all the various perspectives on Batman was entertaining.

This collects three stories in Ellis's Planetary series: "The Authority: Ruling the World," "JLA: Terra Occulta," and "Batman: Night on Earth." These were the first Planetary stories I'd read, and thus the whole thing was a bit confusing, but I still enjoyed this. I thought the Batman crossover was particularly good, with the artwork and style shifting from one incarnation of Batman to another. I think I would have gotten more out of this if I'd read more of the whole series, though.

Since this one had to go back to the library relatively soon, I decided to try and plow through this one. It's a quick three stories - one featuring HP Lovecraft in a happy surprise - and none of which that are exactly crucial to the plot at hand. It was definitely viewed as a fun way to integrate the rest of the DC universe into the story (the Justice League arc was somewhat confusing at first glance), but a lot of it didn't work even though much of it did.

This is a book of one-shot crossovers with Planetary and other various characters (namely The Authority, The Justice League, and Batman).
While this book didn't have as much of that underlying intrigue and all of the homages paid in the regular series volumes of Planetary, it really did have some great moments. The regular series team of Warren Ellis and John Cassaday put together a not-soon-to-be-forgotten Batman story in "Night on Earth", the final chapter of the book. And while I didn't enjoy the other chapters as much, c'mon... This is Planetary... This is Warren Ellis...
A definite must for fans of Planetary.
