Yep, this did the trick! So impressed by this book and it’s characters. The narration of Eli’s thoughts and memories is incredible. He and the characters he meets feel tangible and alive, which can be a hard thing for me to feel with a book. It’s also beautifully written in a way that didn’t annoy me or feel forced. Just a fantastic story with some fantastic characters bringing it to life.
Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton is another great read, I seem to be on a roll of choosing well of late. It's been described as a "coming of age" story of Eli Bell, 12 years old as we begin the book but really, were Eli or his older brother Gus ever only 12 years in the world at any point? Theirs is a world of family dysfunction, poverty, violence, criminality and hardship. But more than anything, it's a story of the love between brothers, the love of family that supersedes everything.
I’m a huge fan of books written in verse, but this one took me the longest time to really get into. I found myself having an extremely hard time connecting with the story itself. It took me multiple times starting and stopping to commit to reading it.
The characters were very endearing and I was so glad I got into it for that reason alone. I found myself very connected to their journey and am so glad I picked this one up.
I will say that maybe the hype surrounding the book made me feel a bit let down and lower the rating from a four to a three star read. Though it could have been the face that I picked it up and put it down multiple times. In the end I’m so glad I committed to this one and feel I got a lot out of it.

Holy guacamole, that's some good writing. I enjoyed everything about this book, from the cover art to the last page. I will definitely pick up the next thing Trent Dalton writes. Highly recommend.
This is a genuine five-star read. The novel pulls you in from the beginning, you can feel the atmosphere as if you're in there with the characters. These characters don't feel like characters, they feel like friends, plucked straight from life.
Gritty, raw, with a touch of magical realism (maybe) - a perfect mix.
Giving this to everyone I know to have a read.

It took me a bit to get into this book, but it’s worth sticking with it to the end. Interesting, unbelievable but totally believable until you start to explain the story.
I absolutely adored this book. The story of Eli and August in the rough part of Brisbane in the early 80s is positively charming from beginning to end. The book was a bit of The Goldfinch, some of The Glorious Heresies and reminiscent of Anthony Marra's novels. . I am a sucker for a noble character in a destructive environment who is going against the odds. The characters were all severely flawed but so interesting at the same time. I devoured this book. It was a delight. I will miss reading these characters so much. Read it if you haven't already. This one gets a 5/5 and goes on my favourite's shelf.

when i found this hardcopy in my office's library i am curious about the cover is. Why so many different splats color in it? And why my friend suggest this books should be in the library? Since i will recommend most of books that i have read and which i liked the best one
This books told about an siblings of Eli Bell and August Bell that living with their mom, Frankie who works as drug dealer. She lived with her boyfriend, Lyle who also works for main drug dealer, Tytus Broz
At the first time this books kinda boring for me since the plot is really slow and it is kinda damn thick hell for almost 500 pages. The other one that i can't stand this books is so noisy. Too many speaking and conversation that makes me dizzy to read it. Maybe i'm more into the narration's story than like conversation? I thouht this books will be finish until Eli Bell and August Bell move on with their new chapter of life but i'm wrong
This books is told us about how they survived living with that drug dealer stuff situation, they had been into dysfungtional family, also i loved how Eli and Slim Halliday's friendships.. I'm also shocked with the plot twist in this books. I thought i will never meet this characters again but again we never know what Mr Trent Balton thought right? I am kinda have in love and hate relationships with this pieces since this is my first australian fiction story that i read in 2020
Thankyou LPEI's Library for lend me this books!
