I loved this book. Its all told from the point of view of Eli Bell. It has some very gory moments, it has some laugh out loud moments and it has some very sad moments. If you grew up in NZ or Aus, you will recognise a number of elements. I like that as the main character ages, so do his insights. You can feel his frustration at his life, in poverty and crime, but also his hope. Would recommend to anyone!

Highly recommend this book! It took me a while to get into it, but once I was hooked I couldn’t put it down. Trent Dalton’s writing is one of a kind, but beautiful none the less. Dalton touched on and highlighted many themes, and I felt so many emotions for Eli and August because of this. Again, would recommend, persist through, it’s absolutely worth it!

Heartfelt. Magical. Funny. Raw. This is a book that has everything! I was heavily invested in the lives of brothers, Eli Bell and August Bell from start to finish. Left me devastated and shook and in a weird, mystical way, restored my faith in humanity. With writing so beautifully and honestly crafted, it's no wonder Boy Swallows Universe has won numerous awards. Simply unputdownable. This book stays with you long after you've read it. Highly recommend to ANYONE who enjoys a good bildungsroman.
