I told myself to sleep and leave the last 100 pages for tomorrow, but then I couldn’t put it down.
I’m completely lost for words and felt hypnotized in this dreamy, yet tumultuous world of Eli and August. I’d need to process all of it in my head before I can write a review :)
I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ more stars.

This is not the sort of book I would normally read, but the buzz surrounding it was irresistible, and I'm so glad I picked it up. It's a laconic, fast-paced, gritty, grimy coming-of-age book, eloquently written and brimming with love for his family amid the drugs and housing commission backdrop.
The protagonist, Eli, is an idealist, a boy with a plan, a kid with a good heart who believes in the good in (almost) everyone. The characters in his world are as vivid and colourful as his dreams, as detailed as his observations.
I simultaneously love and am saddened by the fact that this has its bones rooted in fact, and characters such as Slim really existed and were a part of the author's life. As I am yet to finish the book at the time of writing this, the author's successful career as a journalist gives me hope that things turn out all right for Eli.
This is a page turner, and I can't wait to keep reading.

I've been wanting to read this story for months now and it absolutely lived up to my expectations. Gritty, raw, emotional. So well written. Such great attention to detail. Eli and August are fantastic characters that I was emotionally attached to from start to finish.

DID NOT FINISH

Suffered through 100 pages because of the good reviews but this had absolutely no flow and I found it very hard to read. I felt like I was talking to somebody with a super strong accent that I really had to concentrate to understand.

Solid 4.5 stars.

Eli and August Bell are maybe two of my favourite characters I have read this year. Loved the overall theme of what defines someone as "good" or "bad", and how can good people do bad things or vice versa.

On a personal note, my last international trip before Covid came was a trip to Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island - this book had me reminiscing of the past.
