Glimpses of what made His Dark Materials so good, but it’s overwritten and boring. I know HDM relied on coincidence but this is taken to extremes. The self-insert Malcom character is laughable. The themes are adult but the politics are all YA. There’s one good chapter where you see the old Pullman, but then it’s all over.

I was so exited to be reading about College!Lyra and Philip burned down every ounce of excitement I felt for this trilogy and my overall thinking of him. There's so much stuff wrong with this I don't even want to go there. So many unnecessary stuff happened to Lyra for what? And the relationship he's trying to push down our throats is possibly the worst thing I ever read about. I was expecting to meet Lyra, struggling of course with finding friends or love or because of her past, a little good old adventure or something and instead I got... well.

I picked up this book immediately after reading the first Book of Dust, and I finished it less than a week later. It’s sooooo interesting! This book takes place years after the His Dark Materials series, and it really explores a dark and scary place inside Lyra. It’s stunning.
