I'm pretty sure that this series is going to be the death of me in the absolute best possible way. The way that this book made the last book in this trilogy one of my most anticipated books of next year already. The way this book made me mentally start counting down for it.

This is not your standard middle book, this is so much better. If you need me, I'll be gushing about this book series and the characters.

I received an ecopy of this through Netgalley; however, all opinions are my own.

This was a bit of a letdown for me compared to book one. The pacing was off and some of the characters changed very quickly. It felt like I was reading a condensed version of a longer book. I would have liked more time to come around to Illya's new path, Ephyra's deterioration, and Jude's change of heart. Also Hassan was a major idiot in this book along with everyone else in Nazirah. Khepri felt like a whole new person, and Hassan's plot line felt shoehorned in there to be honest. The major plot points were exciting but it didn't feel as fleshed out as book one. Middle books are often slow, filler books, but this book almost suffered from too much happening. It could have easily been split into two books.

Well while this one is better than the first one, it has a way more convoluted ending and so it's still a 3.
I love Jude and Anton and I love how the author explores someone like Ephyra who is trying to do what she thinks is right and yet it is so wrong, and the despair she comes to feel.
But this needed way more world building and it seems like too much happens too fast. Also the characters evidently have the worlds' MOST expressive eyes based on the sheer volume of knowledge and information the other characters gather from one another's eyes haha.
Also i cannot believe how stupid Hassan is, which ai guess serves to highlight the intelligence of the other characters? Anyhow he is astonishingly stupid

So I will give my review in just a few opinions: Ephyra gives me Cardan vibes, Hassan is a baby but I understand his frustration, Anton and Jude are endgame and I will die on this hill, Penrose is homophobic, Beru just wanted to die and I feel bad that she just can’t off herself, and I also feel bad that hector thinks he’s in love w Beru when in reality it’s just her emotions spilling over to him.
Long story short: I loved it
