I did not like this at all. I expected something gothic, but I barely got it, and instead got pages upon pages of people exercising their worst behaviours on each other.

This book is absolutely not for everyone. Most of the characters are bad people, all make dodgy decisions, and a lot of bad things happen to innocent people. I like this book as an analysis of generational trauma, neglect, and racism- as it's implied that Heathcliff is mixed race. But if you dislike books where the characters are extremely flawed I wouldn't try this one.

Words alone cannot describe the heart-wrenching experience of reading this powerful, beautiful book. It was not a pleasant read but an important one that has changed the way I think.

I started reading this book thinking it would be this strong romance between these two forbidden lovers, but is was anything but that, I found it a very intense dark book but that is exactly what made it good.
Heathcliff was this very violent, angry and hurt character I feel like the way he was treated as a child really ruined him, even when he was with Cathtrine he would hurt her.
the characters troughout the book you really get to know them and their personality traits, there a  some characters I really hoped that they would make it trough. this books touches on subjects such as child abuse, death and trauma. even though it was a quite a heavy book is was brilliantly written, I am definitely going to reread it and recommend it to other people because it leaves you thinking on certain subjects.

I found this one very slow paced and reading it was quite the grind. Exceptionally dark though, so I naturally loved it.
Say what you will about the villain but I was impressed by his perseverance and how he uses the very same systemic techniques that oppressed him to oppress others, effectively perpetuating the misery.
Made me think of Philip Larkin's words:

"Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself."

Sidenote: I'd generously say that I understood about 30% of what Joseph says in the book. Didn't make a difference, really.
