FAVOURITES:
. The Well
. Our Lady of the Quarry
. The Lookout

ANGELITA UNEARTHED (3/5)
I enjoyed the depiction of the baby, the flesh, hue and decomposing state of it all. The story altogether was lacklustre with no real shock value or content feeling. The storytelling was enjoyable with the ancestral links conglomerated with themes of death, innocence and communication.

OUR LADY OF THE QUARRY (4/5)
The teenage girls portrayed are everything I despite and more, enthralled with idealistic beauty perceptions, and vengeful competitiveness. Yet, I was captivated by their petty behaviours, leaving me satisfied with the conclusion and minor plot twist attached.
“as if a cold knife had sliced through our spines.”

THE CART (3.5/5)
Ending did leave me confused, I thought i missed something because I was kind of zoning out in this one. I shortly realised the ending is open for interpretation. My thought process was, did the cart have mystery meat, was the mum cooking something. However, the smoke unlike other stemmed from the opposite terrace. My lasting theory is that Juancho found the ‘cart man’ (as he previously mentioned the need to find him, with his drunken antics). I will leave it somewhat ambiguous to avoid spoilers. Overall, appreciated it for what it was, definitely grossed me out with the shit descriptions, but wasn’t super fascinated.

THE WELL (4.5/5)
I loved the descriptions of how Josephina experienced the world around her and her internal reactions to what seems simplistic. The last few pages kept me intrigued as the suspense built and the connection between the family, the Woman and the well was unveiled. Loved the ending line, it kept it devastatingly familiar.

“as if she were giving herself mouth to mouth resuscitation just to stay alive.”
“please let it be bottomless so I can drown there with the photo and the betrayal.”

RAMBLA TRISTE (4.5/5)
The reveal of the stench made me laugh, i wish i got to know more about the kids and the outcome. Really enjoyed. Enriquez loves making people shit themselves.
“it smelled like a dead dog rotting beside the road, like rancid meat forgotten in the fridge and turned wine purple.”
“they’re like incarnations of the city’s madness, like escape valves.”

THE LOOKOUT (5/5)
Idk it just resonated. I liked the plot, the depth of the dark themes and the comforting yet eerie connection between the women.

WHERE ARE YOU, DEAR HEART? (wtf/5)
As abnormal (like the hearts) as it was, dare I say, it was intriguing. The niche and deviant themes of fetish, sexual exploration and medical illnesses created a scene unlike any other, allowing for confusion, disgust and a want of understanding. (not to kink shame or anything lmao) The intense depictions of genitalia and the detailed descriptions of sickness truly formed a world of perspective.

MEAT (3.5/5)
intense, a bit vile but still enjoyable. the bodily descriptions and ending was fitting.

NO BIRTHDAYS OR BAPTISMS (3/5)
The pedophilia for what, a little too detailed for me, made me uncomfy not in a good way. Other than that, it was good.

KIDS WHO COME BACK (3.5/5)
This story was the longest out of the entire novel, with build up and a lot of reoccurring mentions of the kids being not the true children of the parents. The suspense and buildup led me to believe of a plot twist or turn of events. However, it let me down a little bit, even though it was not difficult to theorise the true nature of the children’s presence.
“depressive indolence that was clear in the vacant stares of the kiosk vendors who apathetically let people run off with candy…”

THE DANGERS OF SMOKING IN BED (3/5)
“What is a nocturnal butterfly or moth?”

BACK WHEN WE TALKED TO THE DEAD (4/5)
The only tab I placed was on “East Bumfuck” because it made me laugh.
