Perfect except the penultimate chapter/story is far too long in my mind (by far too long I mean mildly since it's basically double or triple the length of the others), but, otherwise, icon. Munro is an icon. That this is her sophomore release makes me sick. There are some Miguel Street vibes for me here when it comes to nostalgia, small community relations, coming of age, etc., except Munro is entirely focused on, as on would expect based on the title, girls and women.

Munro is also funnier than usual here. Fans of Flannery O'Connor should flock to this pseudo-novel of rural Canadian life.

I'm not going to rate this book. The writing is lovely, very descriptive and has a nice flow, but in all the "chapters" I've gotten through, nothing much happens. I'm struggling to get through this because it's slow and dry, and my interest in learning more about Del has been wanting for a while. I may revisit.

The NYT recommended this book for nostalgic women.  I am not sure why I thought that stories that take place before I was born would make me nostalgic.  I'm not even from Canada.  This book was not written for me.  It isn't necessarily a bad book.  Its first short story was very interesting.  It made me feel like I was back in English class with how far it compelled me to analyze characters.  It was cool, but just not the type of read I was looking for at the moment.  I may come back to it.

This book was frustrating but also compelling enough to keep going. I loved some of the characters - especially the mother, and some of the stuff with the friend Naomi. But the pacing felt draggy and slow, and I wanted the plot to move a little faster. I really felt like you could tell that Munro mostly writes short stories rather than novels.

Just wasn't for me. Put me in a reading slump.
