Content Warnings

When band nerd Harper learns about a gay dating profile made of her, she freaks out. Partly because her mom is the school dean, partly because she doesn't know her sexuality, partly because her parents are hardcore Republicans, and partly because her dad is running for the presidential election. It's really a huge mess.

And wow, did this book take turns I was not expecting!! I read it in the span of a few days, on audio (thank you, Jenn, for letting me use your library card LOL). It was addicting, and in such a good way. I loved the way the romance developed. It was so cute and while at times I wanted to scream at Harper, MARGOT FOR THE WIN! I also really loved the way Quinlan explored Harper's asexuality. It was beautifully done, and felt incredibly authentic. More aspec lesbians, PLEASE. My favorite part and characters of the book were actually people who were on page for like .5 seconds bUT I don't want to spoil who it was. SO: Skye Quinlan, please give me a whole spin-off of just THEM. My DMs are always open :)

Overall, a wild ride. A book that felt real and passionate, loving and authentic, scary and empowering. Also, please read my friend Jenn's review of this book. I encapsulated only a fraction of what they wrote about.

Really quick easy read. There are fun parts but there’s also some challenging and hurtful parts. Very YA so characters definitely could grow up but they are teenagers so some of them get passes…others absolutely not.

I swear I have read and seen too many queer stories where the MC’s friends suck.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters, the romance, Margot's energy and comments, very much here for it.

I went into it knowing nearly nothing about it other than it was a queer contemporary book, so the asexual rep was such a nice surprise.

Following Harper through the stress of always having to be what her parents wanted or never being able to do things because her mom was the dean of the school and her dad running for president.

I can say with confidence that I hated Harper's mom, so much. I also wasn't a fan of her dad but when Harper needed him he was there in the end, even if he did use her to better his family man image.

Love how conservative parents raise the gayest/queerest children ever. It was such a nice plot twist with Ben (or McDreamy, whichever works better).

The friendships were written SO well. There were ups and downs and lots of drama with some, they were complicated. And as much as I hate several of Harper's friends it was nice to see how she approached some of the issues they caused her. Lets just say Harper is a lot nicer than I would have been near the end of the book.

This book was so well written and I really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the Grey's Anatomy reference when Harper's dad was like: "She's our child, and this is—it's don't be so goddamn thickheaded." (Chapter 27, Page 226) it made me think about that one episode of Grey's Anatomy (S12,E01) which was a favorite of mine.

So basically, 10/10 loved everything and I will most likely read this again.

I really enjoyed the first half of three quarters of this book for the most part but really didn’t like the ending for the most part

like someone else’s review was saying, they could have easily just had it be Evelyn without bringing Nadia and Bellamy into it. Also I will say that I predicted it would be Evelyn from the beginning so it wasn’t exactly a surprise but I did nottt predict the other two and really think it could have done without that. Also I’m kinda proud of myself that I predicted Christian was going to be queer from the beginning lol but I really loved the relationship between him and Ben - definitely one of my favorite parts

overall I enjoyed this and enjoyed some of the character relationships but overall wasn’t something I loved and I do wish we got to see more of what happens after high school in the epilogue etc
Edit: also I just went to look at the content warnings cause there are always a lot I forget and apparently the ones for this book are author approved which is good whatever except the author didn’t mention like a lottt of really important ones? Like outing or medical content which are majorrr in that book like wtf - sorry that just pissed me off a lot

The marching band aspect of this book was absolutely perfect and brought back many memories of spending evenings and weekends in the band room and on the field with my friends. The color guard rep made me sad though because it was all negative.

The plot of the story was interesting enough and I honestly didn’t know how the catfishing sub plot was going to play out. TBH, I’m extremely disappointed with how that wrapped up.

Evelyn could have been the sole person responsible and the story would have wrapped up the same. I’m not sure why the author dragged Bellamy and Nadia into the scheme. It felt like there was all this relationship development throughout the book with those 3 and it was all torn down because nobody could say no to Evelyn? I don’t believe that. Both Nadia and Bellamy have stood up for Harper to Evelyn through out the book but none of them felt like doing anything about the catfishing? And for Nadia to say she did it because she was in love with Harper? Idk. Then Harper turns around and forgives both of them after all that. It just didn’t sit right with me.

I also wish we could have gotten to know more about Harpers life post high school. Her parents and teachers made a pretty big deal about what she was going to do after graduation and we just never find out.

I'm not sure why there are so many marching band books being published this year, but I shouldn't complain too much! As a band geek in high school, I looked forward to this trend. Harper goes to an elite private school, where her mom is the dean. Her father is also the Republican candidate for the presidency. She has a few good friends, but a lot of people treat her differently because of those things. At the beginning of her senior year, she discovers someone has made a fake Tinder profile for her and has been sending messages to one of their classmates, Margot. Harper isn't sure what label she would pick for her sexuality, but she knows that her homophobic parents won't approve. They already have cut off her older brother for partying on campus. Of course, what happens when she starts to fall for Margot.

It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I was there, I was all in. I liked the way it covered food allergies and asthma, and the joy of being in band (although unlike Harper, I prefer concert band to marching band). I did figure out who put up the profile early in the book, and I was pretty sure I knew what twist would come. That didn't stop me from enjoying it though!
