What a truly improbably, Dickensian plot turn this one takes.
If possible, I would have given this 3.5 stars - I enjoyed this, as I have the other two books, but I think I would have liked it better when I was younger. As an adult reader, I often felt like the characters were acting too old or too young for their ages, and some of the scenarios just didn't ring quite true.

This children's novel was probably a 3.5 for me. I tend to look at children's literature from the perspective I would have as a child. I would have LOVED this. There is so much warmth and joy amidst the conflict. Some of the plot is a little silly, and I had a hard time relating to the pressure the "Oldest Available Penderwick" felt to care for the family. After all, there WERE responsible adults in their lives. Still, I enjoyed the happy escapism I found in this story.
This time the Penderwicks split up and some of them travel abroad, some to New Jersey, but most to Maine, where we get to see them in different roles and getting older, as sisters take on new responsibilities and tackle new obstacles. This Penderwicks story was much better than the second, and now I am excitedly anticipating the next in the series that just came out.
In particular, Skye developed a lot in this book, as she began the Oldest Available Penderwick (OAP), due to different summer vacation plans. She rose to the challenge as she found out her new role required a lot more of stressful responsibilities than she could have managed. Jane discovers a new idea for her next Sabrina Starr novel in a very cute, but definitely not over the top, summer romance. And Batty, well in this book, we finally find out what it is Batty is going to be good at. Hooray! She is no longer an interest-less, bland and doofy younger child, but an older child that has a skill set and potentially room to grow. Thank goodness and about time.

I want to live somewhere that has the Casson family on one side and the Penderwicks on the other. Delightful.

My heart is so filled with joy upon finishing this book. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. I love these girls. They're kind, thoughtful, and REAL, not cloying or unrealistic. And i want to rent a house in Maine for a month, too!
