A beautiful study of one man’s life, and his ups and downs in rural Austria during the twentieth century. The novel’s depiction of its endearing central character is simple yet deeply felt, and the way it follows the changing years and it’s effects on him are touching and nostalgic. I read the original German so cannot comment on the English translation, but would recommend it to anyone who wants a slow and poignant read.
