Holy moly this took me a long time to finished. I liked it but not sure why I struggled. I was interested in the story line but I felt like the book wasn't as fast paced to keep me intrigued. Lots of interesting twists.

This book has a unique plot, that turned into a great story. I loved the majority of the characters and the idea that family doesn’t always follow the norm. The book is on the longer side but I thought the length suited the plot and what was going on.
My main problem was, Perry has his entire world, turned upside down, and the author never really let him express his anger or get too upset. While the author does address this, a few times, briefly, I didn’t like reading how Perry basically kept everything bottled inside. Yet, at the first chance Perry’s mom got, she was able to fully express her feelings. That annoyed me throughout the book, but I was still able to enjoy it.

Thinking he is 'saving' this 11-year-old boy who has been raised in a jail from birth, this D.A. separates him from the only family he has ever known and postpones his mother's parole hearing. Perry has been raised to be honest and respectful and a good friend. We hear his thoughts and understand his feelings.

Beautiful. This is a book that will teach character development if there has ever been one. I loved the characters and I loved PERRY. A boy that has grown up in a prison for non-violent offenders (his mom is an inmate), Perry is lovable and sweet in a way that charms the reader from the first page. Uncovering the inmates that make up Perry's strange family was an amazing part of the story as well. Perry is pulled from his home when a DA finds out and thinks his childhood has been horrific. There is mystery, friendship, and a lot of love. Read aloud material x1000.

I did enjoy this book even though you couldn't imagine it happening in real life and you certainly don't want children of this age group to believe prison is all fun and games but it raises many questions for discussion.

A fairly enjoyable read - definitely far fetched and on the lighter side of what I expected. Even though this book is geared towards middle graders, I found the story interesting as an adult. It was very predictable, but still had a few good insights. Character - building was lacking for me.
