Cute book with a lesson about not judging a book by its cover. My 4 year old loved it

Sophie Mouse encounters a new friend, someone completely different than she’s ever met before. Nervous because of stories she’s heard she initially avoids the new friend. Sophie mouse returns home sharing her worries with her parents who quickly help dispel any worries she has and encourage her to not make judgements on others before getting to know them herself. Sophie decides it’s her turn to be brave and helps welcome the new friend to the neighborhood and creates a welcoming environment at school for her new friend.

Was great to read with my 2.5 y/o

This is a great transition from picture books to chapter books. The story is simple, with a charming setting, and accessible language. The message is genuine without being didactic. I think Sophie Mouse is a winner for my shelves!

June 2021:
reread with the younger 3 kids. So fun to go back to the beginning.

May 2020:
Read aloud with the youngest 3 - fun to revisit with my younger kids. This first book in the series does a great job of highlighting what it means to be a kind friend, especially when someone is new and different. Perfect for my family

This is a sweet early reader with darling characters and a lovely message about overcoming personal prejudice. However, I have to say that the mixing up of seasons was totally distracting to me. This book takes place ostensibly at the end of winter break (in early spring?), but the character pick lots of blackberries? This may not distract other readers but it's irritating to me, and I feel these kinds of errors contribute to our children's alienation from and lack of understanding of the rhythms of the natural world.
