This novel was beautifully done. The small additions of thoughts and emotions unable to be shown through a film was magnificent in a manner in which it enriched the story and greater understanding to the reader.

Decent, easy and quick read. Spock is absolutely without a doubt in love with Kirk.

This book’s primary failing is its - predictably - poor handling of the female characters. In particular, Rod absolutely cannot help getting really gross any time Ilia is mentioned on the page.

To be fair, the source material is quite awful.

Pros: introduced the concept of K/S soulmates.

Cons: constant, bizarre and uncomfortable commentary on women as sex objects. This was interesting as far as illustrating the mentality Gene brought to Jim as a character, and to the role of women in the series.

As a standalone book it was allright. The storyline wasn't earth shattering, but I really enjoyed the character's perspectives on their lives post Enterprise 5 yr mission. When compared to the movie though, wow. The movie leaves out practically the whole plot.

I found the use of exclamation marks a little excessive, but that aside, the narrative was conceptually interesting.

I absolutely love a STAR TREK novel. This one did not disappoint.

I never considered ST:TMP one of my favorite TREK films until adulthood. Ever since that one evening watching it and thinking "wait, this is actually really good", I've been intrigued to know more about its history and fuller story.

Written by Gene Roddenberry himself, this novelization reads less like it came after the fact and more like the basis for the script. The opening is very different (in a neat way), and several notions within the book read like the origins to later canonical aspects. (Holographic communications seen recently in ST:DISC and the entire backstory of the Borg)

Reading this was like revisiting an old friend. A true delight.

A novelization that stayed with the movie plot and did stray from it. So it knew what genre it was and stayed in its lane. But the plot of the first movie is just so poor that I can’t rate this much higher. I thought maybe I would take on a new appreciation for it after reading this but I just kept thinking of those long drawn out scenes of nothingness. Also a lot of misogyny for some random reason. Aka a whole species of alien that’s specifically designed to give dudes boners at work. The k/s parts that Roddenberry desperately tried to pass off as Two Bros Being Bros were the best parts.
