It was confusing. I like the first story better than the second. Maybe I'll reread it one day and it will make more sense. Maybe.

Cassandra Khaw is a spectacular writer. It's a sledgehammer swung at Noir and Urban Fantasy, sloughing off the dead weight and creating something devastatingly lean and gory. Good as hell.

This is basically two novellas combined into one, and the first is stronger than the second. It's at times funny, but mostly dark and brutal. I enjoyed the fact that it didn't shy away from how violent the old stories are, and how it didn't bother holding your hand on the Chinese gods. You'll figure them out just like you know who Hades is.

For the second novella, although I definitely felt Rupert's sense of being yanked around while the gods fought with each other, I didn't understand the plot. And granted, that may have been the intention as the gods certainly don't gaf about the human they're sending around the globe for their amusement, betting on and against him. I found my mind wandering more and not as interested in the quips.
