Think post-apocalyptic cowgirl and you've about got it. It wasn't a bad read, just not my style. Entertaining, but the story for the most part was full of the usual tropes under the layer of Las Vegas gone rogue. I can see YA readers who would devour this and be asking for more.
I wanted to like this book so much! It is a futuristic Wild West story, which sounds so fun...but I was so disinterested. The concept had such potential, but I just couldn’t get invested in the characters. I had to force myself to pick it up until the last 1/3rd of the book, at which point it finally picked up and got interesting. ⭐️⭐️1/2
Look at that cool cover!
Never judge a book by its cover.
I didn't finish Gunslinger Girl. Note to self: always read the description!
I made it about 30 pages in, and quit. It just wasn't for me. It was a western/dystopian combination, and I didn't like it at all. I thought about giving it more of a chance, but I have too many other books to read!
I'm sure there's an audience for this book - I'm just not part of it, unfortunately.

I really enjoyed this book and I am hoping there will be more in this world.
More for high school than middle school.

I received this book as an ARC from Goodreads. I really enjoyed Serendipity as a character and her personality was very believable and realistic. I thought the setting was very interesting and I really wanted to know more about Cessation and the events that led to the second Civil War. I think more depth into that background is the only issue I had with the book. But I would definitely read another book set in the same world as Serendipity's, whether it be a sequel or a prequel, count me in!
I absolutely adore the 'wild west' setting and the idea of a fierce lady sharpshooter, but came up disappointed with the weak character development, the over emphasis of the overwritten dystopian romance, and the fact that almost the entire story is set in a modern city and not (the reason why I chose to read this in the first place) the wild west. Darn.
“Welcome to Cessation, Serendipity Jones. The last place on the continent where you can do whatever the hell you want.”
I am not sure what has come over me, but Westerns are my jam right now and it all started with The Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely! The story itself is actually set in the future, though we aren’t given a concrete time, it’s a time that has surpassed technological advances. Basically, the story is set in North America after the country went through a devastating Civil War. After the war and a shift in power, a new government was established called CONA and they forced the inhabitants of America to live on separated communes, women are sold for large sums of money due to a high infertility rate, and the world resembles the old west once again. Our main character Serendipity “Pity” Jones is a sharpshooter with big dreams, but her abusive fathers want to sell her off. As you can imagine, Pity isn’t having it and she runs off to Cessation, a city considered the seedy underbelly of the world, thus our story unfolds!
I highly recommend this to anyone who is apprehensive about Westerns because it doesn’t read as you’d expect. The beginning is a tad slow, but it’s worth it in the end. The plot moves quickly, there are twists and turns around every corner, you never know who to trust, and the politics are unbelievable.
But my personal favorite aspect of this story? The characters! Each character was fleshed out and unique. I lived for the banter and the theater performances (did I mention there is a theater?!)! I also lived for the slow-burning and sweet romance. This book is fun, and a 4/5 ⭐️ for me!
