What a great book this was. It's exciting, heart-warming, confusing, sad, thrilling, wholesome and funny.. The book starts with an introduction to Rosemary, starting her first day on the job at the Wayfarer, and it's easy to assume the story is going to be about her character arc - but boy, would you be wrong. While we spend the first two chapters mostly in her shoes as a way to get introduced to the world, we quickly move on to the rest of the crew. Almost everyone on this ship can be classified as a main character, and everyone's story is fascinating.

It's never predictable, also owing to the fact that you never stop learning new details about the worlds. The characters are likeable, the story is super interesting and there are some high intensity moments in the book that keep you on your toes. And, as an extra "covid benefit", getting to explore fictional galaxies while you personally can't travel is just a very nice bonus.

If I have one gripe with the book, it's that I want to read even more about the events that happen. The scenes themselves are interesting and engaging, but I would've loved to see more of the aftermath. Often some seriously heavy shit happens and while I'm still reeling from the event, the book skips forward days or weeks (or "tendays" as they're called) and moves on, and I just want to know more.
I want to know what happened between Jenks and Lovelace when she got her body, I want to know more about Sissix' and Rosemary's friends with benefits situation, I want to know what happened between Corbin and the crew when he was released from prison, I want to know how Ohan handled being cured against his will.. there's so much stuff I just want to know about
. Look, the book's pretty lengthy as it is, so I get it - but still.

Overall, I just really like the worlds Chambers has crafted, and I love the characters she wrote. And if my only gripe is that I need more of the book, I guess that's a pretty good problem to have.

This book made me realize I've been reading just to count books, not always for the stories. This was such a beautiful exploration in world building and cultural differences. Forget every other fictional destination, I just wanna be in the Fishbowl. The characters are all so fully developed, I can barely pick a favorite (Dr. Chef is up there, though). I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series, hopefully before the 4th one comes out in April.

Absolutely loved this book. It has the vibes of Firefly with a truly interesting and diverse set of alien creatures and well developed interspecies politics and conflicts. I always love when when worldbuilding is well done, and you can see the thought put into it, and this book hit all those points. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series
