The Truth About the Devlin’s is a legal/domestic thriller that centers on TJ, an ex con and recovering alcoholic, and a situation that his brother John, a lawyer at the family firm, got into centering on an embezzlement cover up. TJ starts to unravel the story and sees that things are not as they seemed - and his family is in danger as a result.

I absolutely loved After Anna and What Happened to the Bennetts, so I was really excited to read Lisa Scottoline’s newest thriller. This one fell short for me. I never really got that invested in the plot and I didn’t find it particularly fast paced.

I loved TJ’s character and I loved reading from his perspective. The dysfunctional family dynamic was intriguing. But, I felt as though it took too long to connect the dots with the people that were targeting the characters.

Overall, this one is a 2-2.5/5. I think it’s an average thriller, but not my cup of tea.

Huge thank you to NetGalley and GP Putnam books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Quick read for book club.  Not my favorite writing.  The majority of the book was written in an uncomfortable voice of the main character.  There were more extraneous details at times and a lack of seemingly important details at others in the book.  It was almost like the author was going through the motions for most of the book. The writing was disjointed at best.  When the book book talked about legal litigation, the structuring changed and the writing improved.

It was an alright book, held my interest, more of a family drama vs a thriller I think.

As a fellow black sheep of the family (I wear it as a badge of honor now), I had to read this one—and it did not disappoint! Lisa Scottoline delivers a legal thriller packed with family drama, murder, and enough secrets to keep you flipping pages late into the night.

TJ Devlin is the outcast in his successful, lawyer-filled family. He’s trying to rebuild his life after past mistakes, but when he stumbles onto a murder tied to his family’s law firm, things take a wild turn. The deeper he digs, the messier things get—because in this family, the truth is a dangerous thing.

This book is so much fun. It’s fast-paced, full of juicy family tension, and had me hooked from the start. But I have to say—the ending? A little underwhelming for me. I wanted more of a punch. Still, it’s a solid, entertaining read that’s perfect if you love legal thrillers with complex family dynamics.
