October 2017: I don't know how I feel about this novel. I think I enjoyed it less than I did the first time, but I appreciated it in a different way. Full thoughts to come!
November 2012: Very interesting story but I found that some areas could have used more details and more suspense. I still really enjoyed it though! You can read it in one sitting like I did, it just flows nicely

Very powerful emotionally, but it could use some help technically. The changes in POV were confusing, and I missed parts of Clay's narrative because Hannah's was more compelling.

+++++Well I read about 60 pages of this book when daughter read it last year and she kept urging me to try again. I finished it, I don't like it. +++++++++++++++++ The topic in the book is suicide and YES she has lost someone to this. We have had many conversations about why people do this and how the ones coping with it feel so helpless. She felt it was a good book because the person took the time to call out everyone who wrong her in her life and that was the reason she ended her life. Even though ending your life is not the answer. That is what she took from the book.
For me, I didn't take much from the book. Hannah wanted to lay a guilt trip on the people around her.. Yes horrible things happen to her but in a few she let those things happen. The big one being the scene with Bruce in the water and Courtney walking away. Hannah could of left scream or did something besides just letting it happen. I would like to see how her parents were coping with her death and the school addressing the issues that led to her death.

This is not a suicide novel! Yes, it does discuss it and that is why the book exists, but it does not exactly dwell on suicide and how it happened, but why and who the person was before she died. Hannah Baker records thirteen reasons on thirteen tapes and sends them off to people. You have to listen to the tapes until you get to yours then you send it off to the next person. Clay Jensen is the main character in this book and he is everything a book character should be. I find that Clay is just so real and it's really refreshing. I could actually see this happening in real life and that sort of makes it harder to read, but you really should. Again this is a "bottle book" because it's set in a single night and I again read this all at once because I didn't want to be set of course. I read this book after I had finished reading a very fast paced fantasy series and just wanted a single story to sink my teeth into and I was not disappointed. It's a tear jerker of course, but I think that is what makes it good. Any book that can make you cry is a masterpiece in my opinion, it just shows how good the author is at understanding the human mind.

Yeah...I'm conflicted. It was a page-turner, but I can't help feeling it was very heavy handed. It doesn't leave a lot for the reader to think about, because the message is so obviously beat into you. Do teens need that?
Thirteen Reasons Why is about Clay Jenson, a boy who used to be friends with Hannah Baker. Hannah Baker killed herself. When Clay goes home one day there is a box of cassettes and when he listens to them he realises that Hannah has left a list of thirteen reasons why she killed herself. And Clay is one of them.
I know a lot of people see this as a revenge suicide story and think it is extremely harmful. And whilst I see where they are coming from I think that this is an important story and brings light to a lot of important issues that people may not have as much modern access to.
I think using a novel is a great way to convey a message to a large young adult audience. This book helps people to understand that every little thing you do matters. It seems like common sense but a lot of people need a reminder and this is an honest way of conveying that message.
I loved the two different perspectives between Clay's perspective and Hannah tapes. Although I sometimes had some difficulty telling the difference just because of the italics used.
I do think from an outsiders point of view, that some of the reasons on the tapes were quite unfair on the characters involved but I suppose that a lot of little things do add up to large feelings and ultimately ended Hannah's life.
There are better books in the world that handle depression and suicide but that isn't to say that this story isn't important and won't help a lot of people.
Personally, I think this book will make you think about everything you've done or said to other people and how it could have affected their life. And I think a message as small as that is important and just what the author of the book would want.
The writing in this book wasn't overly complicated but I think the story needed a simple writing style for such a hard-hitting plot.
There were only two main characters that you really get to know and that was Hannah and Clay. I really think the plot is the main focus of the book and getting to know the other characters above what they have done to Hannah would have taken away from the message of the book.
There was something missing. I don't know what and I couldn't come close to naming it but there was just something that kept me from really loving this book. Whatever it was, it kept me from giving this book a five-star rating. It was really enjoyable though.
I recommend this book to everyone. I think someone who has a more personal connection to suicide may find it quite difficult to read but everyone will have their own experience reading a book like this.

I didn’t like this as much as I thought I would. Though this was about suicide which is a hard subject. I some
quarrels with the main character Clay. I just didn’t like him a character. He was very underwhelming. The fact that he just stood there watched things happen made me not like him. The fact he keeps blaming her for what happens like the world revolves around him. I’m not Sure the author made him an unlikeable character on purpose but I didn’t like the way he thought.
