I first heard this story on Dateline and through some true crime podcasts. It was during these ventures that this book was mentioned. Already knowing the story, I was pleasantly surprised to find that first, Leslie Rule is a great story teller and second, she revealed some aspects to the story that were left out of other tellings. This was definitely a page turner!
Sometimes I love to read a good thriller that is packed with lots of twists, turns, and surprises. I read this book so quickly and was not disappointed one bit!
I love the writing of this book and how easy it is to fall into the story and really get taken away by what happens. I do not want to give too much away to anyone who may want to read this, but it will absolutely keep you wanting to read more and more all the way up until the very end! Usually I can predict what will happen and sort of make my guesses, but this book really kept me on my toes and made me keep guessing. It was so much fun to read this book and be constantly entangled with what was happening and completely addicted to the story and seeing the resolution!

Leslies style is similar to her mothers. However she has her own distinctive fare in her writing. Great book. People forget how quickly social sites could turn deadly.
Not bad, I think Ann Rule books are better than this one.
I received this pre-publication book from BookishFirst in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, I found this story to be completely fascinating and suspenseful. Upon initially receiving the book, it wasn't immediately clear that this was a re-telling of a real crime, so off the bat it would have been helpful if the summary on the back of the book clearly stated that. Once I realized this, it was definitely difficult not to read up on this case online before/as I was reading. We follow three main characters throughout the case: Dave Kroupa, a single dad looking to meet women through online dating sites and enjoy his social life again; Shanna "Liz" Golyar, Dave's on-again/off-again girlfriend who is looking for commitment; and Cari Farver, a single mom who briefly dates Dave before she goes missing from her town in Nebraska, but then seemingly becomes obsessed with Liz.
To say that this case is complicated is an understatement. There are so many different people involved in the case that it is difficult to keep track of them all. Understandably, the author may have been trying to convey the confusion that law enforcement were faced with when solving the case, but for a reader, the facts, timeline, and people could have been more clearly presented. For example, we know up-front that Dave is a father of 2, but it wasn't until almost halfway through the book that the reader learns Liz has kids of her own!
Additionally, I thought the author spent a little too much time diving into unnecessary side bars throughout the story. For example, the case mentioned that Nebraska has the death penalty, and the author plunged into a page description of the first death penalty sentence in the state, the statistics of males vs. females that are sentenced to death and other specific case examples. While these are interesting facts, they are completely unnecessary to this specific case and only add to the confusion.
Overall, this crime was fascinating, but it definitely could have been presented a little clearer.

This book's story is quite disturbing, to say the least.
I found that it was frequently very difficult to understand the book's structure, which made it difficult to follow the events that these people were going through. The book was also filled with a lot of unnecessary information dumps that took the focus away from the primary case and gave the reading pace issues.

This was a really good book. A young woman goes missing, after spending time with her new boyfriend, Dave. Dave, however had been seeing several women, one who was extremely jealous of all the women, he saw, besides her. This woman, was smart. The law enforcement community was smarter. The missing woman, however tends to text loved ones, and others. Will they find her? This was the first book that I've read by Leslie Rule and I was hooked right from learning about her background and past. I would highly recommend this book to any podcast or true-crime fan, it's indescribable and the events are unfathomable. I can't wait to share this with other friends who love watching true-crime documentaries and listening to true-crime podcasts. Thanks Bookish First for the Advance Copy!
so bad. Written in a national enquirer type of manner and apparently the author believes by telling stories of killers it helps women be safer so really hyped that piece up. Plus unnecessary explanation of the World Wide Web. In a book published in 2020. I just could not. And i had bought it.
