Quick read, not as good as the first
Read this one on the heels of the first because I wanted to see where the story went. While the first was laid out well, this one I feel was too rushed in the reveal of the murderer. In a story as short as a novella, there should only be one main plot line and maybe some character development of it’s meant to be a series. This just had too many story lines. Still, I’ll probably read the rest of the series.

As we return to Widow’s Island I have to say that while it was interesting that two authors were writing this series I found it easy to transition from Kendra Elliot to Melinda Leigh. Their styles are similar enough that I wasn’t completely thrown off by the change of author and I can only imagine the intense process they went through to accomplish this series. I’m always impressed when authors co-write books and series.
Again, as is the pattern with this series it was a quick read (only 101 pages) but still Melinda Leigh was able to drive the series forward with the limited pages.
This book focuses on Tessa more than Cate and part of me just might like Tessa a bit more than Cate. However, I’m only two books into the series so that could change over time.
In order to care for her sick mother Tessa had returned to the island after making detective in the Seattle police department. Returning home and expecting less intense work than the city of Seattle Tessa thought it would be just like any other night but soon a dead man is found, stuck via a harpoon to a sign. Definitely a bit less routine. As a result of this strange crime Tessa teams up with Logan, a local park ranger, to find the murderer.
There are currently four books published for this series and six announced with expected publication in 2020 (October and November, respectively) so I will be jumping back into this series sometime soon, I just need to figure out when that will be.

2.5
I don’t think a novella series is for me…..and it took me longer than I care to admit before I realized this wasn’t the same heroine from book 1.

Novella
I wish it were longer, but the story is solid. Great for waiting on appts. Recommend it to anyone who likes mystery/crime with a touch of romance.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was really excited for this new series because I've read a lot from Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh. I like their stories and character development. This series focuses on Cate and Tessa. Elliot writes from Cate's point of view and Leigh writes from Tessa. The first two novellas are not the same story from different points of view, but rather two stories a few weeks apart.
Cate and Tessa have a great friendship. Tessa comes home to take care of her mother and younger sister when her mother is diagnosed with dementia. She starts to reconnect with Cate's brother, Logan, which could be interesting in future stories.
I think my biggest issue would just be the novella format. Since they are independent novellas, the story wrapped up by the end. But since it was shorter, there wasn't a suspenseful build up. They just kind of wrapped up the case and caught the bad guy.
I'm excited to read more about Cate and Tessa. I hope there is more on them working on Samantha's case.

A Bone to Pick
These authors have changed my opinion about novellas especially when done in a series like they do. I really enjoyed this book, it was fast paced and a quick read.
